Where is robin soderling now
Being an athlete can be incredibly challenging for your mental health, and for me, my own strive for perfection, as well as the constant pressure I was putting on myself was in the end almost killing me. But I waited until I felt ready and completely healed. Data shows that up to one in three elite athletes suffer from mental health issues which can manifest as stress, eating disorders, burnout, depression and anxiety.
We need to start discussing it and make sure that the next generation of athletes will come better prepared than myself. Besides that I got really excited when I saw Rafa lose the first set not because I do not like Rafael Nadal but because like many I wanted a change in champion. I perhaps had a little Nadal fatigue and Soderling was the only guy who had been genuinely able to trouble the Spaniard on the dirt.
Even more surprising as two weeks previous in Rome he had suffered defeat at the hands of Nadal. It seemed as if Nadal could not be troubled on the dirt and for most people it was true. He stuck to his tactic and went with his instincts, flat and hard in the corner. Wham bam. Even after a tight second set in which Nadal pipped Soderling to draw level , The Swedes level did not drop. He persevered with his high risk but high reward tactic.
Amazingly he took the second set and the fourth set went to a breaker in which he won to send the Phillippe Chatrier into raptures and tear up the form guide for the French Open. Robin continued his good form through the rounds and made it to the final of the French Open. In the final he faced Roger Federer who had come through his own battles to reach the final.
The last three or four years of my career, even though I was not the favourite in the Grand Slams, I always felt that if I played well I had a chance to win. In the beginning of my career, I was just happy to win a couple of rounds. But yeah, maybe. You have to play really aggressive. I had to take chances and go for my shots, and that day it worked really well, I was hitting the ball extremely well. I always had tough matches against Roger. Playing against Djokovic, Nadal, I could go off the court and feel I played well.
But against Roger, he just made me play bad. Hm…but if they are both at the top, I think Novak would beat Roger more times than the opposite. He moved so well, got so many balls back. There were so many guys that were injured, and tennis can only blame itself for that.
The sport would really benefit from having a longer break. There has been a lot of hype around Elias — what can you tell us about him?
