Why jeremy lin left knicks
Smith for being "all about the money", suggesting that there may have been some sadistic intent on his part attached to his fielding Houston's "poison pill" offer sheet.
Jeremy would seem to disagree with that assessment. In an interview with Pablo S. Torre of Sports Illustrated , Lin discussed how he wanted to remain in New York, but that the Knicks preferred to "steer him toward the open market so he could assess his own price. Torre's article suggests that the change came about after the Knicks caught wind of the initial offer and figured they'd have no trouble matching it. Lin, it seems, never had the opportunity to talk figures with Knicks brass.
For some reason, the Knicks felt like Lin was not worth the money over the course of three years. But the thing about it is that even if Lin did not live up to the contract he signed, the Knicks had options when it came to getting under the luxury tax. But, in classic Dolan fashion, he let emotions get the best of him and let one of the most recognizable players in the NBA skip town for nothing. But my main goal in free agency was to go to a team that had plans for me and wanted me.
If he wanted to return to the Big Apple, and he represents so much additional money because of jersey and ticket sales, why not bring him back? Dolan reportedly felt deceived by Lin, according to the New York Daily News , although the Knicks told Lin they would match any offers. I was like, man, we have to find a way to make this contract, like bring down the money, bring down the years, whatever we need to do, make it easier.
Unfortunately for Lin, he didn't get his wish, as the Knicks ultimately didn't match Houston's offer, which was backloaded specifically to make it difficult for the Knicks to match. In all, Lin played just 35 games for the Knicks, and during the same interview with MSG, he revealed that the biggest regret of his career was not fully appreciating his time in New York as it occurred. My biggest regret is that I was too immature and young to really learn how to not take that for granted.
I was so set on the next season and rehabbing from my injury and what I wanted to happen next that I couldn't stay in the moment and just appreciate that, and appreciate New York for who New York was and what New York did for me, who all those fans were, and what that meant. Lin's run with the Knicks was extremely memorable, and while he played some good ball at his other stops, he was clearly the most comfortable on the court during his stint in New York.
